Instructor: Kate Despres
Kate Despres is a former high school biology teacher who has been an organic grower for 18+ years and loves to combine her passions of ecology, growing, learning and teaching! Kate currently owns and operates Daisy Hill Farm, a small organic farm sited on one acre in Acton, MA.   Although she misses selling plants at Farmer’s Markets, she is excited to expand her seedling selection for home gardeners this year and is always looking for interesting new varieties to try.

Organic Garden Pest and Disease Prevention and Control

Have you grown a lovely patch of veggies just to have them snatched up by other creatures?  Learn to keep both small and large critters out using organic methods (ie. no harmful chemicals) Yes -iIt is possible! The first step in preventing crop damage is to grow strong, healthy plants and recognize the pest problems before they become too large. In this class, you will learn how to recognize and diagnose the most common diseases and pests by examining the type of damage on specific crops. Types of prevention include crop rotation, physical barriers, companion planting, natural deterrents, and hand-picking. We’ll also cover a variety of organic homemade and commercial products to help eradicate pests once they are present.  You will leave the class with an illustrated guide about pest damage and control suggestions.
